MeEt Tyrone & Alma
Alma and Tyrone have been blessed to have the opportunity to serve several church of Christ Congregations since 1975. They have worked full time with congregations in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. Their last full time preaching ministry was ten years at Porter Church of Christ, in Porter, Texas. In July 2008 they dedicated their efforts to foreign mission opportunities. Although most of their mission efforts have been teaching South Sudanese Refugees in the Gambella-Sunset International Bible Institute Extension School in the Gambella Region of Ethiopia, they have worked in Ethiopia, Ghana and South Sudan, Africa, Sao Paula, Brazil and many regions in the Philippines.
Alma has accompanied Tyrone on previous trips to Brazil and Ethiopia, but is no longer able to travel to third world countries, yet she is his strongest supporter. Often brethren think of the work of the man; however the statement coined many years ago, "Behind every successful man is a great woman of love and encouragement", certainly is true of Alma. Her steadfast commitment to the Lord, her love for the furtherance of the gospel and sacrificial spirit continues to encourage Tyrone to keep on keeping on.
In 1995 the Muslim rulers of Sudan became strong enough to lead a crusade to convert all Sudanese to the Muslim Faith. The Sudanese had three choices: convert, die, or leave the country. The result was a mass exodus. Some neighboring nations opened refugee camps to accommodate the refugees.
A Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Sudanese Muslims from North Sudan and the Judeo-Christians from South Sudan was signed July 9, 2011 bringing a conclusion to the 25 year civil war and the Sudan was divided into two nations: North Sudan and South Sudan.
When the peace treaty was signed a Dinka Tribesman was named President and a Nuer Tribesman was named Vice President of South Sudan. Unfortunately, in December 2013 the President and Vice President began accusing the other of trying to gain power over the nation and a tribal war began forcing many South Sudanese back to the refugee camps.
Ethiopia, a border nation, opened several camps for the refugees during the 25 year civil war and four new camps since the tribal war. Consequently several Sudanese were converted in Ethiopia and the Ethiopian Brethren invited some of the South Sudanese to attend one of their five Schools of Preaching. In 2006 the Ethiopian Board of Directors of the Ethiopian Schools committed one campus to have an annual School of Preaching for South Sudanese Christians. The majority of the students attending the School lived in the Malakal and Nisar Region of South Sudan and in refugee camps located in the Gambella Region of Ethiopia.
In 2008 Tyrone was asked to teach in the school in Addis Ababa. In 2011 a decision was made for Tyrone to direct the Sudanese School of Preaching. By the Lord’s providence, the Ethiopian Government had given the church land for a compound in the Gambella Region and the brethren had erected a church building which could also be used to house the school of preaching; therefore, Tyrone made a decision to relocate the School to the Gambella Region where most of the students lived. Additionally the school has the protection of the Ethiopian Government being located in the Gambella Region.
Although the Sudanese School became independent from the Ethiopian Schools the Board of Directors of the Ethiopian Schools welcomed and endorsed this great opportunity. They remain eager to assist the work in any way possible as this is the fulfillment of their dream.
Tyrone makes four, 3-4 week trips to Gambella annually and travels to South Sudan when it is safe, to teach and encourage the brethren. While in the States he speaks to congregations and individuals about this great English speaking evangelistic opportunity striving to raise funds for the work. Anyone seeking additional information or desiring to set up an appointment for Tyrone to speak to a congregation or group should contact Tyrone at [email protected] .
